    It’s only rock & roll…

At trade shows, music can be heard on many stands, as background music or part of video presentations. Five top trends that venue sales and marketing professionals should understand

Every day, around the world, a multitude of new venues open their doors to meeting planners and conference organisers. Cities and resorts worldwide are spending vast sums of money constructing purpose-built conference centres or renovating existing facilities. The global hotel industry, recognising the importance to its profitability of hosting and servicing meetings, is also expanding its offer in this area; and an increasing number of residential conference centres are available at universities and colleges. There is also a rapidly increasing number of ‘unusual venues’ being promoted as places where meetings may be held. These are venues based in establishments such as cultural venues (museums, cinemas, theatres …), sports venues (football stadia, racecourses, cricket grounds …) and tourist attractions such as historic monuments, castles, zoos and aquaria, and theme parks.

5 Best Practices in Destination Marketing to Consider for 2016

As competition among Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) becomes stronger and smarter, suppliers are experimenting with innovative marketing tactics to reach meeting planners and association executives. Sometimes the most innovative techniques involve making a radical change to a basic service or sales strategy that the organization has been doing since the beginning of time. To uncover which marketing practices are the best from the perspective of our industry’s clients – the meeting planners and decision makers - Development Counsellors International (DCI) recently launched the second edition of A View from Meeting Planners, Winning Strategies in Destination Marketing, expanding upon the 2012 survey for a closer look at planner perceptions today. How to look good at IMEX America

Style has nothing to do with fashion. Style defines the singularity of an individual as opposed to a trend followed by a large number of people and brands or designers do not dictate it. One person can be stylish dressed in inexpensive clothing while another can be wearing the latest runway collection and look as if their clothes were allergic to their skin. Every industry has a balance of elegant advocates and style killers, ours is no exception. Over 12 years of participating in industry events I can clearly recognize those who have packed two hours before their flight (in the dark) from those who have taken adequate time to plan how they will look on the show floor. I would like to share a few tips for those who are open to them, while keeping in mind that style does not know right or wrong, just genuine authenticity.

    One industry voice?

As many of you will have seen in the press and online forums recently, an historic event took place at the IMEX Politicians Forum in Frankfurt last month. That event was the issuing of a joint statement by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC). The statement followed many months of negotiation and dialogue as well as the participation of both Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and David Scowsill, President & Chief Executive Officer of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) in the annual IMEX forum.

Human Trafficking and the Events Industry - Don't look away

As you’ll know from my other blogs on this page, I occasionally find myself jetting off around the world. As an event planner, global travel is a vital—and often hugely enjoyable!—part of my job. So it was that in October of last year I touched down amid the flashing neon lights, wide boulevards and slot machines of Las Vegas. I felt a little overwhelmed at first, not unlike Dr Raoul Duke in Hunter S. Thompson’s infamous Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. But I soon acclimatised. And, contrary to the opinion of my colleagues, I was not there to gamble away my wages (though I did have a brief flutter at the blackjack table). The reason for my visit was the America’s worldwide exhibition for incentive travel, meetings and events, the IMEX America.

“The Extraordinary Power Of Shared Values”

Event Organizers have a daunting job. With limited staff, often dependent on people over whom you have no authority, you are expected to produce a bigger and better event than last year with great food and adult beverages, a fabulous fun quotient, all on a lower budget than last year. Daunting. How do the top-notch Meeting Professionals do it? Quite the same way that most high-performance teams operate, they collaboratively align their colleagues for peak performance...

Organizational politics? Oh no! Not for me

Other people are political, but not me, I’m the good guy................... Organizational politics seem to evoke negative responses from many people, either due to personal experiences or from association with people who have behaved with lack of integrity. Add to this a link to Politicians (with a big ‘P’) and you end up with a wicked cocktail of negativity that is sometimes hard to understand.
