Reshaping an Association's Value Proposition in a Transnational World
Regardless of the current status of your association's pursuit of its global aspirations, this discussion will allow leadership to consider the following essential questions: How can we determine a transnational strategy that is driven by value rather than hubris? How can we determine with confidence what constitutes both common and customized value among diverse populations? What are the distinctions between a global and an international organizational strategy and how do we determine which will work best where? How do we sustain a culture of innovation in a complex enterprise? What core competencies will we need to execute our strategy? What approaches can we use to select the opportunities we will pursue and identify what remaining low performers will be re-engineered or abandoned? How do we re-assess the allocation of our resources? This highly interactive 75 minute session uses mini-case studies, practical assessment and planning tools, and practitioner/ expert conversation to enable participants to leave with new ideas, options, and a plan of action.
Speaker: Glenn Tecker, Chairman & Co-CEO, Tecker International LLC
--- How to Turn your Meeting's Intellectual Content into More? More Money, More Benefits, More Relevance! There is tremendous value tied up in the content generated at events and more and more associations are realizing that. Increasingly, one of the most interesting challenges for any designer of meeting formats and pricing structures is how to ensure that this value is unlocked and put to work in service of the association’s strategic objectives. Whether it is financial or educational. This session looks at a number of interesting ideas that have been developed, and the technical solutions that enable them to function, and raises some of the key issues now being debated: on security of data and knowledge in an era of instant and open communication; on variable pricing and when to make content free of charge; on using content to market the association to new audiences; and a host of other key topics such as: • Why do I want to do more with my content – the Association view. Moderator: Speakers: Michael Brill, Associate Director-Global Academic & Professional Affairs, Merck & Co Inc. --- Adapting Global Strategy to Ensure Local Relevance and Operational Success The commitment to become a global organization is a long-term, strategic one which not only requires new thinking at the Board level but also at operational level. This session will explore how three US-based associations with international members and customers are redefining their global and local value proposition. Through practical experience and case studies we will explain the importance of research to identify global trends, changing business models and future opportunities, particularly in the conference business. Learn how good local market intelligence can refine your organization’s strategy and tactics to grow regional markets. What are the keys to operational success in emerging markets, such as China and Middle East? Moderator: Nikki Walker, VP, Global Association Management & Consulting, MCI Group Speakers: Howard A. Wallack, Director, Global Member Programs, Society for Human Resource Management Jim Gurowka, International Development, Institute of Management Accountants Susan Root, Director Conference Business Services, IEEE |
OR: Specialist Workshop: Keeping your Head above the Weeds: Managing Contractual Risk with your Association Conferences Associations assume risk when signing major contracts related to conferences, both large and small. Association staff and leadership need to understand the most current trends and market influences that impact contractual language and resulting risk. Learn from an attorney who used to be a meeting planner and a negotiations expert who has been involved in thousands of contracts, as they discuss the current issues and solutions to challenges facing associations in managing risk. Speakers: Gary Schirmacher, CMP, Senior Vice President, Strategic Account Services, Experient Patricia A. Ekers, Esq., Attorney, Client Services, Experient |

Deep Dive Session (This session is three hours long. Delegates can choose to join this session, or take part in the concurrent themed sessions/ workshop outlined above)
Deep Dive: Associations at the Crossroads – The Shifting Landscape of Business Models and Membership in an Uncertain Future What does the future hold for associations? While a compelling conversation starter, our tendency to seek one "answer" to this question can distract association leaders from critical analysis and thinking, while a sustainable future hangs in the balance. As our members face new challenges and opportunities, association leaders must consider a range of scenarios that will influence and change current business models, practices, and primary lines of business. Join us for crucial conversations that examine points of high impact that have the potential to change the way we run our organizations and membership at a peak of efficiency and performance. If you want simple solutions and answers, this session is not for you. If you want to explore the complex issues and hard questions that confront us at these crossroads, then join us for a thought-provoking discussion with peers who are facing these very same challenges.
